More Work from Home Jobs – The Best Side Effect of COVID-19

With layoffs and furloughs hitting peak numbers, work from home jobs have become more sought after than ever. And that’s a good thing.

COVID-19 hit the economy like a ton of bricks, leaving more people than ever scrambling to find work from home jobs. The sudden switch from daily commutes to mandated quarantines left many businesses at a loss for what to do next. As a result, the companies that have survived the storm so far quickly adapted to a work-from-home model.

As the country sees an increase in remote working, one has to wonder if this is the best thing to come out of a global pandemic. Here’s why we hope this “futuristic” approach to working stays for the long haul.

An Explosion of Work from Home Benefits

Working from home was once an elusive benefit only made available to a small percentage of workers. Now that businesses have to make the switch in order to stay open, remote jobs have become the gold standard.

Back in 2011, a mere 28 percent of workers could telecommute. Fast forward to today, and a whopping 54 percent have work from home benefits. Best of all, employees enjoy this perk. They often rank it higher than other conventional benefits, such as retirement plans or health insurance.

However, working from home is not possible in every industry. For example, food service, manufacturing, or retail workers need to engage in-person with their customers. But many of these industries can transition some of their staff to at-home positions to encourage social distancing.

Employees Maintain a Better Work/Home Balance

Americans have a difficult time balancing their work life from their home life. People invest much of who they are into their careers, and it leaves very little time (or energy) to be fully present at home. Remote jobs help equalize the work/home balance.

Take your daily commute, for example. Think about how long it used to take you to drive to work in the morning. Now that you’re stuck at home, you probably don’t miss the commute at all. Eliminating this once necessary evil is one of the biggest allures of working from a home office. The time you gain by losing a commute, you can now spend with your family.

Workers who have more free time to pursue outside hobbies or interests tend to stick around. They work hard and don’t call out as often. Providing work from home benefits is one of the easiest ways companies can retain their best employees.

Benefits Small Businesses the Most

Surprisingly, the companies that benefit from remote employment the most are small businesses. The crisis disproportionately hurt smaller companies. But those with work-from-home perks already in place were able to remain afloat.

Companies with fewer than 50 employees tend to offer more remote positions. About half of all small business employees have the option to work at least part of the time from home. However, this trend doesn’t hold true for bigger corporations. Why is that?

Small businesses have one thing larger companies don’t—a much tighter budget. Allowing workers to log in from their homes saves businesses a ton of money. There is less overhead. And small companies can maintain close relationships with their employees through remote meetings. It’s harder for bigger companies to leverage the same benefits.

Those working from home for small businesses report feeling more satisfied in their position. They are less likely to seek work elsewhere, so employers don’t have to worry about the cost of hiring and training new staff regularly. And saving money at a time when the future of the economy is uncertain is a must for all businesses.
