Company Culture: What It Is, and Why It's Important

Company Culture: We’ve all heard of it, but what is it really?

No, it’s not just Zoom happy hours: rather, a company’s culture defines every aspect of how its employees work, lead, and communicate. It is regarded as the set of shared beliefs and values that dictate day-to-day activities, not only giving the team something to be excited about, but providing the glue that holds the company together and solidifies the set of values that everyone can find common ground over. Company culture tends to the common longing to be a part of something bigger than ourselves, encompassing the ideals and set of values that define the company.

Company culture is key to establishing a brand identity, building a strong team, and retaining engagement from employees. It can allow for simpler recruiting, as maintaining a strong set of values helps infiltrate the type of candidates you attract. It is known by modern employers and employees alike that a defined and successful company culture can make or break a company.  Yet, it is something that needs to be polished and developed. Here are some of the key elements of a successful company culture, to ensure that your culture is lasting and effective:

Core values:

The majority of companies have a set of core values, yet often many employees are unfamiliar with theirs. These are more than just plaques hanging on a wall: the company’s core values should reflect the ideals and goals of each employee, serving as reminders as to what they are working for and why they do it. They are the vision and purpose of the company, upholding each employee to a particular standard and prefacing how they are expected to work, behave, and lead. These values should guide day-to-day decision making and remain rigid, never compromising even if for the sake of convenience.

When hiring, it is necessary to protect the company values and culture in order to prevent them from being destroyed. Making an attempt to hire the type of people who share the same values and who will work to uphold them will help in strengthening and maintaining the culture. When discussed, executed, and practiced in an efficient manner, the core values should serve as the foundation that the company grows off of. Digital Market Media’s foundation is based on the importance of maintaining a balance of work and personal life—this creates a work environment in which employees share a mutual understanding that there is no job more important than family or friends, therefore creating a diverse team who can all come together over similar values.

Platform for personal and professional growth:

We all seek a sense of fulfillment, and work is a great place to get this. A necessary element of a successful culture is ensuring that the company is made up of people who share similar values, both personally and professionally, and constantly strive for growth within both areas. When team members feel as if they have any opportunity to grow, employee retention is increased and overall morale is boosted.  At Digital Market Media, our core values encourage personal and professional growth, and it is made clear that opportunities for promotions are always available. It is not uncommon for promotions to occur multiple times within one year, as the team members at DMM are receptive to the core values of working with integrity and work tirelessly to make their goals clear and known.

Community within work:

Part of the fabric of a company that strives is a strong and accessible community. Although DMM is a completely remote company, our numerous committees serve the purpose of connecting our nationwide team, through fundraisers and fun all-company meetings. Recognition of accomplishments is crucial—offer incentives for top performers, show appreciation towards teammates when reaching milestones, and celebrate each other’s victories. Create an environment worth sticking around for. A strong community creates a sense of bonding between the team, allowing employees a place where opinions can freely be voiced, ideas are offered and listened to, and the opportunity for growth within the company is provided.

Access to Leadership:

A gap between leadership and the employees could potentially signify a leader who is hesitant to be open and vulnerable around their employees, perhaps attempting to separate themselves from any questions or concerns voiced around the company. Yet leaders who make a point to regularly interact with team members create more engaged and productive employees.

Having an “open-door” policy is a strong contributor to a great culture. Digital Market Media’s bi-weekly meetings are an opportunity for open questions and opinions, all of which can be directly voiced to the CEO in attendance. Victories are shared, and team members are celebrated. Having access to leadership provides insight for our team members as to which direction the company is headed in and what to expect from the future, all while providing a sense of empowerment and inclusion. This incites motivation and excitement as well as allowing any team member to speak freely on their opinions and direction to the CEO. Leaders who listen, respond, and act on team member’s concerns are successful in moving the company forward and surpassing new milestones.

Company Culture like you’ve never seen before:

At DMM, our company culture is the center focus of everything we do. From how we run day-to-day activities, encourage each other, and celebrate our victories, all is done in respect to our core values of integrity, respect, and work-life balance. Digital Market Media’s culture is centered around how it can best serve our team members, as we understand that the best work comes from team members who are respected and empowered.
