Are you ready to join the Great Resignation? 

According to MSN, a Monster.com survey found that a whopping 95% of workers are considering quitting their jobs. That’s nearly everyone. Many people say they’re considering a job change because they’re suffering from burnout, and 92% of people might switch industries to find better job opportunities.

People have started to call it the Great Resignation. Workers are quitting – or at least thinking about quitting – in droves. 

There’s a good chance that you’re part of this movement. Maybe you’ve already quit your job, or maybe you’re tempted to quit. If so, this is a moment of great opportunity. The decisions you make now will impact your professional, personal and financial life for the foreseeable future. 

You can improve your life, but you also need to think carefully. If you quit one bad job, you don’t want to end up with another job that’s just as bad – or possibly even worse. You need to find a better position. To do this, you need to think about why you’re unhappy with your current job. Then you need to find an opportunity that can provide exactly what you’re looking for.

Why Are Workers Quitting?

During the pandemic, many people were stuck at home, and this gave them time to think about what they really wanted. In many cases, they realized that their jobs were not making them happy. 

This Business Insider article calls it “epiphany quitting.” Workers are fed up, and they’re reexamining their priorities. They also know that a lot of companies are hiring right now, so they have options. The result? In April, around four million Americans quit their jobs. That’s a 20-year high.

So what exactly do workers want? Although different people might want different things, in many cases, it boils down to two main issues: flexibility and pay. 

Workers Want Flexibility

Remote work became a necessity during the pandemic. Although some people struggled with childcare issues and isolation, many people thrived while working at home. They loved not having to waste time or money on a daily commute, and they appreciated how much money they could save on clothes and lunches by working at home. Many workers also loved having more flexible hours and the ability to juggle home life and work life in a way that made sense for them.

Now that offices are beginning to reopen, many of these workers are reluctant to go back to the way things used to be. A survey from the Grossman Group found that 48% of employees who are working from home want to continue working from home.

Unfortunately, some employers don’t feel the same way. Some managers want their workers back in the office. Maybe they don’t trust their workers to work remotely, or maybe they worry about productivity and collaboration. Regardless of the reasons, it’s leading to conflict. According to Business Insider, one poll found that 39% of workers will consider quitting if they can’t work remotely at least some of the time. 

You might be in this position yourself. Your manager is demanding that you return to the office, but you’re not ready – and you don’t think you ever will be. You need a job that offers flexibility now and in the future, without having to worry that the flexibility will be taken away. 

Workers Need a Good Income 

Income is another key motivator in the Great Resignation. Many people are pushing for a $15 minimum wage, but the federal minimum wage is still only $7.25 per hour in 2021 – the same rate that it’s been since 2009. That only equates to $15,080 a year. 

As inflation surges, the low wages are more and more of a concern. According to Investopedia, the minimum wage has not kept up with the cost of living since the 1960s. It no longer provides a living wage, and a person earning minimum wage while trying to support a family of four will fall significantly below the poverty line. 

Many workers are now refusing to work for such low wages. They’re looking for jobs that provide a good income for hard work. If you’re earning less than you’re worth, you’re probably feeling the same frustration. 

What Job Opportunities Are Available Now?

Some workers might be able to turn their office job into a remote position, and they may be able to negotiate higher wages. For many dissatisfied workers, however, a career change is needed. These workers need to find a new position that will give them the flexibility they need to maintain a healthy work-life balance, as well as the income they deserve.
